After passing the game as Alucard, you can acquire special modes by entering a name when you choose a new game:

Richter Belmont:

Alucard Special:

Retain Alucard's Gear:
Go through the initial 2 areas, full of zombies and other enemies. When you finally arrive to the 3rd room where you find Shaft, enter the room and then get out. If done correctly, the Shaft scene will be skipped, and you'll keep all of Alucard's equipment.
